Packing Tips When Moving Furniture and Belongings

One of the largest chores when moving house is the packing. It can be amazing how much we accumulate over time and it is unbelievable how much packing materials we need for the job. One of the main considerations is to start early with a relocation. Leaving this job will mean that it is rushed and not done properly and result in breakages and damage to precious possessions. As soon as you know you are on the move start planning early and make a moving checklist. Either buy packing supplies from the removal company you choose, or ask at local furniture stores for used boxes. Make sure that if you opt for second hand boxes to make sure they are in good condition. You want strong and durable boxes to protect your belongings. In addition you will need extra items such as tape, labels, marker pens, newspaper, plastic sheets and bubble wrap. You will be amazed at how many boxes you will need. It is crucial to keep small boxes for heavier items such as books and larger boxes for lighter goods. Remember you have got to carry them.
First you have to assess what you want to take with you to your new address. It can be a good time for house movers to have a good sort out and get rid of rubbish and unwanted belongings. Also it can be a trip down memory lane when going through the old photographs, and family heirlooms. Dump what you don’t need any more; there are a good selection of recycling sources to get rid of unwanted glass, paper, cardboard, plastic and clothes etc. Other stuff you could give away to charity, local fetes or people you know. A new address can equal a fresh start so some things may not be worth the cost of moving. You could always arrange to invest in new appliances to be delivered immediately to your new home rather than shift older appliances. It may be worth discussing a deal with the new owners, rather than take larger bulky items of furniture such as wardrobes, fridge freezers and washing machines.
When you are left with what you want to take with you to your new address, start with things you don’t use much. Pack boxes in a similar weight and not to heavy. Make sure glass, ornaments and breakables are well protected with bubble wrap and packed securely. Try to make sure that it is secure and not going to slip around, as this is the main cause of breakages. Place softer items in to cushion the fragile things. Label clearly, with what is in the box. If you can use a colour code to each room to each box for instance orange for the kitchen so all kitchen stuff has this identification. This will make it easier when moving to allocate boxes to their specific destination, instead of having a huge pile of boxes to go through in your new home. When moving furniture disassemble large items where you can and wrap and protect in plastic sheets to stop from getting scratched. Keep fixtures and fittings together and attach to a larger part of the furniture. Place soft pillows and bedding in wardrobes, and secure the doors for the move. This extra weigh will be unnoticeable to the movers.
Use the garage to store whilst you pack. Try to do a room at a time instead of completely causing disarray throughout the house. Keep a record of everything you pack so you know where to find them when in your new home.
